By Jim Dower: Heavyweight Denis Boytsov (36-1, 27 KOs) was reportedly found with serious head injuries in an underground tunnel in Berlin, Germany last week. According to Mogenpost.de, Boytsov has been put in an artificial coma so that swelling can decrease on his brain. He’s in critical condition.
It’s unknown what happened to Boytsov at this point to put him in this state. The German police are investigating the incident to find out what took place. A subway rider round Boytsov lying on the tracks and he informed the authorities.
The 29-year-old Boytsov was found between the stations of Bismarckstrasse and Wilmersdorfer Strasse in Berlin.
“We know nothing about the cause of the accident, therefore we will not comment on it,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Denis and his family, we hope, that he completely recovers.”
Boytsov is trained by Ulli Wegner. The Russian born Boytsov was in a position to get a world title shot against IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2013, but a 10 round unanimous loss to Alex Leapai ruined those plans. Since then, Boytsov has won his last three fights against Timur Musafarov, George Arias and Irineu Beato Costa Junior. Boytsov’s last fight against Costa Junior, a 2nd round stoppage, took place last March.
Boytsov is a good heavyweight with excellent talent. His only problem is he lacks size for the division. At 6’2”, 225lbs, Boytsov is considered small compared to some of the other giant heavyweights in the division. If he were fighting in the cruiserweight division, he’d more of an advantage.
With Boytsov’s head injuries the status of his boxing career is up in the air at this time.
