Mayweather vs. Pacquiao negotiations with zero activity this weekend, says source

mayweather232By Chris Williams: Other than Floyd Mayweather Jr’s 12-second video that he created this weekend for his Instagram account, there was no activity this weekend in the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao negotiations, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. His source said that nothing happened this weekend aside from the video Mayweather put together.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations have reached a stall point over a small number of issues, as well as the HBO-Showtime negotiations.

These are areas that Mayweather and Pacquiao both are optimistic that they’re going to be able to reach agreement. The thing that’s not known is whether HBO and Showtime will wind up killing the negotiations by failing to agree.

“Regarding #MayweatherPacquiao source involved in negotiations told me “zero activity this weekend other than Floyd’s video,” Dan Rafael of ESPN said on his twitter.

There’s too much money on the line for the networks to mess up the fight. They can’t afford to hold up the fight because this could very well be the last time they negotiate the fight.

“Mayweather is so experienced and hard to get a clean shot on,” trainer Joe Goosen said via esnewsporting.com. “That’s the problem. He’s not fond of southpaws; everyone on the inside knows that. He doesn’t know what it is to lose.”

When asked if someone will eventually beat Mayweather, Goosen said “It depends on how long he stays around. Roy Jones looked like he would never lose, either, but he stayed around a little bit too long.”

It’s going to be tough for Pacquiao to land enough of his shots cleanly for him to win rounds against a fighter as good as Mayweather. You can pretty much rule out any chances of Pacquiao being able to score a knockout of Mayweather.

It’s been six years since Pacquiao knocked anyone out, and that was in his catch-weight fight against Miguel Cotto in 2009. I think it’s safe to say that Pacquiao won’t be able to score a knockout in this fight unless he lands a shot that Mayweather doesn’t see coming.

Of the two, I think Mayweather has a better chance of scoring a knockout than Pacquiao does. Pacquiao leaves himself open frequently when he attacks his opponents, and this is going to enable Mayweather to land a lot of his counter shots against him.

The negotiations need to be completed at all costs, because neither fighter has great options available to them if they can’t get the fight made. Pacquiao especially is faced with very limited options. His promoter Bob Arum will likely immediately sign him up for a fight against one of his Top Rank stable fighters like Jessie Vargas.

Indeed, it’s very probable that Arum will match Pacquiao up against Vargas because it could potentially turn Vargas into another Tim Bradley as a decent money maker for Top rank in the future after Pacquiao gives Vargas his Midas touch by fighting him. But the important thing for Pacquiao is that he’s facing limited options with Vargas, and a fight between them isn’t going to make big money on pay-per-view.
