Pacquiao will overwhelm Mayweather

pac55By Sam S: In this present generation where money is more important to boxers than their legacies, we see a constant scrutiny on the pay-per-view numbers of certain fighters by the hardcore boxing fanatics. So, here I will discuss everything about PPV buys of two of the most loved and hated boxers of our generation, which are of course Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. Lets see the PPV numbers of their recent fights:

Mayweather-Guererro- ‘875,000 unsure’ Mayweather-Alvarez- ‘2,200,000 ‘ Mayweather-Maidana- ‘850,000 unsure’ Mayweather-Maidana 2- ‘925,000 unsure’

Pacquiao-Marquez 4- ‘1,150,000’ , Pacquiao-Rios- ‘475,000’ , Pacquiao-Bradley 2- ‘800,000’, Pacquiao-Algieri- just over 300,000 unofficial sources.

As you can see clearly that the numbers of Pacquiao have gone down in recent years pretty drastically. In that duration though Pacquiao fought two top pound for pound fighters, was hurting one until got himself got knocked out and beat the other pretty clearly. You see the other side of the equation and see that Mayweather has fought guys who were good punchers, but were also slow and weren’t the top pound for pound guys by any stretch. So, what this shows is that one guy who challenges greatness gets less appreciated because he lost once and the other guy gets called a masterclass, just because he fought guys who were  over matched and so slow that even a simple duck and slip from Mayweather seemed to be a boxing beauty.

If you call yourself The Best Ever [TBE], then you need to prove it at all times. Muhammad Ali did, Sugar Ray Leonard did, Mike Tyson did. They weren’t always successful, but, that’s what makes them great. Boxing has always been synonymous to life, you win at times and you lose brutally at times, but, you need to challenge life and so in boxing as well. You maybe an undefeated fighter, but, unless you have faced the top guys the ‘0’ in your record isn’t highly rated, and that can be seen from history, in the cases of Rocky Marciano and Joe Calzaghe. Roberto Duran was knocked out face first by Thomas ‘The Hitman’ Hearns but, he took his defeat like a man and came back and created his legacy and his universe. Losing in life and in boxing is not that important, how you take your loss and come back is more important. Mayweather has had a history of not fighting fighters who were dangerous to his ‘0’. He ducked Sergio Martinez , Paul Williams, Antonio Margarito, Manny Pacquiao in their primes.

Why does the Mayweather camp think that Pacquiao will easily be beat by Mayweather, thats because they got to support their fighter. You will never hear  a trainer say that his own fighter is gonna get beat real bad. Even Tim Lane in support of Chris Algieri, told that he will put Pacquiao to sleep. Besides they think that since Marquez beat Pacquiao so, Mayweather will beat Pacquiao easily as Marquez was beat easily by Mayweather and also because Mayweather is a better counter puncher than Marquez. Now, the truth is blurred there. Before the Mayweather fight, Marquez fought at 135 lbs and was made to jump up two weight classes and come up to 144 lbs to fight Mayweather and Mayweather didn’t make weight for that fight too, he came in at 146 lbs. He was so much obsessed with beating Marquez to earn the bragging rights for Pacquiao bout that he wanted to go to any extent and wanted to beat up a small man by not making weight. Second thing is many people think that Mayweather is a better counter puncher than Marquez which is not true. Mayweather is not a better counter puncher than Marquez, rather, he is a different kind of counter puncher than Marquez. Marquez takes risks to land his counters , while Mayweather waits for his opponents to commit mistakes and then counters them. Now, Mayweather hasn’t faced a very fast guy in  a while so, he doesn’t have to be on his toes to land counters as the mistakes his opponents make are slow and easier to time.

The critics of Pacquiao say that, he lunges in with his left hand and is open for check hooks at the moment. But, if you see closely Pacquiao  is so fast and athletic that more often then not when a move is made during that lunge by the opponent Pacquiao changes direction quickly to avoid counters. Besides if you have watched Mayweather’s fights closely you know that Mayweather steps back to avoid any damage when someone  lunges with a punch, so, he won’t have a chance to land a check hook on Pacquiao.

So my final take is, if that fight finally happens, Mayweather will get overwhelmed and get beat by Pacquiao clearly as Mayweather hasn’t seen speed and stamina similar to him shown by any of his opponents in recent years. He will be still a great fighter and if he truly is great he will show his greatness by how he comes back from his loss in the rematch. As we all know when two men step in the ring, all that matters is heart and skills and no matter who wins both gain something from the experience. Lets unite as fight fans and make sure that this fight finally happens ” #fightpacquiao ” as this is truly what the fans want to see.
