Bellew: I’m going to shock Adonis Stevenson

bellew46By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KO’s) thinks he’s got newly crowned WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) all figured out in terms of his fighting style and he believes he’s going to shock Stevenson and the world by beating him when the two fight. Stevenson ripped the WBC title away from Chad Dawson last Saturday in destroying him by a 1st round knockout in Montreal, Canada. Bellew for some reason thinks he’s the kryptonite to defeat “Superman” Adonis.

Bellew said to Sky Sports “You’ve got to use your brain. I’ll go about it in a way that will probably shock people and shock him because I’ve studied him…Adonis Stevenson is wild and he gives you opportunities.”

I think Bellew is starting to sound deluded. I don’t what he’s talking about. Adonis didn’t look wild to me last Saturday night. He looked cautious until throwing a left hand to the head of Dawson that knocked him out. Before that, Stevenson had hit Dawson only two other times and both were fast right hand hooks.

Those punches were impossible to block because Stevenson threw them with so much speed that Dawson didn’t have time to react until after they had landed. Dawson is a pretty quick fighter, but Stevenson made him look slow in comparison.

Bellew is even slower than Dawson and totally upright with his fighting stance. He’s going to be like a tall stork against Stevenson and it’s going to be really tough on him. Without speed and without great defense, Bellew is going to be sitting duck against Stevenson.

Stevenson said he wants to fight Bernard Hopkins or Andre Ward next, not Bellew. But if he can’t get either one of those guys to face him, Bellew will do. I see it as a tune-up type of a fight for Stevenson to keep him busy until the top guys – Ward and Hopkins – are ready to face him.
