Guerrero: I’m fighting Mayweather at the right time

guerrero33By Dan Ambrose: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero firmly believes that he’s getting his May 4th fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. at exactly the right time in his career to pick him off and hand him his first defeat of his 17-year pro career.

Guerrero sees rust in Mayweather’s game from his last fight against Miguel Cotto last May, and he thinks the year that Mayweather has been out of the ring since then will further hurt him when they face each other at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Guerrero said to ESPN “He’s been out for a year. It does take a toll with that ring rust…It does take a toll on you. I think its perfect timing (to get the Mayweather fight at this time…and I’ve got to be ready for him.”

This is definitely the best time thus far for anyone to be facing Mayweather because he did not look spectacular in his last fight against Cotto. Mayweather was hit a lot in that fight, and suffered a bloody nose. Had Cotto not run out of gas after the 8th round, he would have had a really good chance of beating Mayweather.

Guerrero may have problems with his stamina as well, however, because he clearly faded in his first fight at welterweight last year against Selcuk Aydin. Guerrero won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision, but he took a lot of punishment in the last four rounds, and he mostly slapping with his punches.

The power that he had displayed at featherweight and super featherweight was missing from his game.

Mayweather is there for the taking, but it may take a better fighter than the pumped up featherweight Guerrero to do the job. He’s moved up too many divisions in a short period of time, and now he’s facing the best fighter of his entire career.

It doesn’t matter that Mayweather has aged a great deal in the past few years, he’s still a really tough fight for Guerrero because he’s just a better all-around fighter.

Guerrero’s whole thing is to walk you down while throwing a lot of punches. He blocks nothing, and he fights in a straight up position. Compared to the quality fighters that Mayweather has fought in the past like Juan Manuel Marquez, Guerrero is a huge step down from them in terms of skills. The only thing Guerrero has going for him in this fight is his work rate, and that may not be enough to win.
