Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, says they have two possible opponents that they’re currently looking at for that fight but he’s not saying who those fighters are.

However, Schaefer already tipped his hand at the Garcia – Erik Morales press conference last Saturday night by mentioning 34-year-old Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) as someone that Golden Boy is considering for that fight. Judah is from Brooklyn, so it’s a natural for him to be selected.

Schaefer said to RingTV “We are currently looking at two possible opponents…I’m not going to disclose who they are.”

It’s going to be someone from the New York area that’s for sure, and it’s got to be a fighter with a name because Golden Boy is going to want to pack in fans at the Barclays Center and I don’t think Garcia can do that without him being matched against a well known East Coast fighter. With Golden Boy it could be anyone and not necessarily an opponent from the light welterweight division. They could pool from the lightweight division to find Garcia someone because they’ve been doing that lately with their fighters Amir Khan, Paulie Malignaggi and Saul Alvarez. I can see Golden Boy grabbing a lightweight if they can’t get Judah to take the fight.

Judah is a pretty awful choice if you’re looking at competitive match-ups, because his track record has been pretty bad in recent years. He does have a win over Lucas Matthysse in 2010, but that was a really controversial fight that is more of a non-victory than actual win.

It was a hometown fight for Judah, and he appeared to lose the last 8 rounds of the fight after capturing the first four. Judah took a beating from round 5 until 12. Golden Boy obviously wants a name for Garcia that casual fans will recognize, hence Judah will likely get the pick. But as far as it being a competitive fight, it won’t. Judah has seen better days and perhaps should be thinking retirement soon.
