Abregu wants rematch with Tim Bradley

Image: Abregu wants rematch with Tim BradleyBy Dan Ambrose: After easily dispatching highly hyped previously unbeaten welterweight contender Thomas Dulorme (16-1, 12 KO’s) by a 7th round TKO victory last Saturday night, #10 WBC Luis Carlos Abregu (34-1, 28 KO’s) said he’d like to fight WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley next to try and avenge his 12 round decision loss to him from July 2010.

Abregu lost by the scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 in a mostly one-sided fight from start to finish. Abregu’s biggest problem in that fight wasn’t Bradley’s power, because Abregu was clearly the bigger puncher in that fight. What was Abregu’s problem against Bradley was his lack of hand speed compared to Bradley. This hurt Abregu and kept him ultimately from being competitive.

The chances of Abregu getting a rematch with Bradley are quite low indeed. Bradley just got a good payday against Manny Pacquiao in beating him by a controversial decision last June, and Bradley wants to fight only the top names in the welterweight division. He waited around for months to see if Pacquiao would try and avenge his loss to him, but when Pacquiao opted instead to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, Bradley has decided to stay inactive for the remainder of the year while he waits for a big name to free up for him. Bradley had a fight with Lamont Peterson offered to him, but he chose instead not to take the fight. Bradley will be waiting around until next year for someone like Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Miguel Cotto to show interest in fighting him.

I think what Bradley is doing by waiting around could be a big mistake for him. By not fighting he’s not helping himself because he’ll be forgotten by boxing fans. As the saying goes, “Out of sight, out of mind.” Bradley can’t just sit around like the more popular guys like Mayweather, because he’s not on that level and I don’t think one of the big names are going to volunteer to fight him because of the less than impressive pay per view numbers his fight with Pacquiao brought in.

Abregu would be a good stay busy fight for Bradley so that he can stay sharp while he waits for a big name to come looking for him. I suspect Bradley may never get that big fight that he’s hoping for, and may have to be satisfied with guys like Robert Guerrero, Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto instead. I doubt Pacquiao will ever waste time fighting him again after the last time.
