By Chris Williams: In a strange appearance on ESPN that seemed to go off topic to the extreme earlier Thursday, Juan Manuel Marquez was asked by the ESPN hosts who he thought would win in a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. It was strange because the focus of the entire show should have been to help hype the December 8th fight between Pacquiao and Marquez. However, it just seemed like the ESPN hosts were more interested in how Pacquiao would do against Mayweather.
The focus wasn’t exactly respectful of Marquez in my view, because it’s as if the ESPN hosts were ignoring Marquez’s very real chance of beating Pacquiao on December 8th when they meet up in Las Vegas. A loss for Pacquiao will take away any chance of a Mayweather-Pacquiao mega fight unless Mayweather is still interested in fighting Pacquiao despite the fact that Pacquiao will have lost his last two fights. I can just see how Bob Arum would spin this one in trying to sell the fight for a steep price on pay per view.
This is what Marquez said about his thoughts on whether Pacquiao could beat Mayweather or not: “They are both very great fighters, but I think Mayweather [will win]. Floyd is very defensive. He doesn’t have aggression. Manny will be looking for the fight all night, because Mayweather you know doesn’t like to fight. I think Mayweather is the best fighter defensively.”
It was at this point that Pacquiao revealed his game plan of how he’ll go about trying to beat Mayweather by saying he’d try to overwhelm him with punches.
Marquez already tried beating Mayweather himself when he fought a ring rusty Mayweather in 2009. However, Marquez lost almost every round in a 12 round decision defeat. Mayweather was too quick, too tall and much too good defensively for Marquez to do anything.
