Image: Khan to make an announcement next week about new trainerBy William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan will be finally revealing who the replacement will be for his trainer Freddie Roach, who Khan is looking to replace after Khan suffered back to back losses in his last two fights against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.

Khan told Philboxing.com “We’re going to change a lot of things. I know that I will be much stronger and much [more] explosive…I am gonna announce one next week.”

Khan has been checking out New York to find a new trainer over there. He seems to be under the impression that New York is where he can find a good trainer. There are obviously good trainers there, but Las Vegas has a lot of quality trainers as well that Khan may be overlooking.

What Khan is looking for is a trainer that can give him more time. His current trainer Roach is highly popular and is juggling a number of top fighters, such as Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. These guys aren’t struggling like Khan is, and it’s no wonder why Roach isn’t interested in dropping one of these guys to give Khan the extra time that he feels he needs.

Khan thinks he’s going to be stronger and a better fighter with a new trainer. However, I think he might end up disappointed when things remain the same.

If you look at the way that Khan fought before he started training with Roach in 2009 and compare it to how he fights now, it’s pretty much impossible to see any real change. Khan looks like the same fighter he was pre-Roach than is now. He still runs around the ring like he used and still throws flurries of fast shots that leave him open to getting hit.

If Roach wasn’t able to make any changes to Khan’s game how can you expect another trainer to? At the end of the day, Khan might be better off staying with Roach, for better or for worse, until the bitter end.
