Chavez Jr. doesn’t deserve a rematch with Sergio; he needs to prove himself against someone else

Image: Chavez Jr. doesn't deserve a rematch with Sergio; he needs to prove himself against someone elseBy Dan Ambrose: After getting completely schooled in losing to Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday, there is no way that former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) deserves a rematch against Martinez. That was just ugly one-sided fight, and Chavez Jr’s lucky knockdown of Martinez in the 12th wasn’t enough to cover up for how badly Chavez Jr. was beaten in this fight.

It was one of the most lopsided fights I’ve seen through 11 rounds, and Chavez Jr. failed when he had a chance to win it in the 12th by missing with some finishing shots after having knocked Martinez down.

Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum is already talking about putting a rematch between Chavez Jr. and Martinez in the Cowboys Stadium as soon as Martinez’s right knee injury and cut above his left eye heals. However, Chavez Jr. doesn’t deserve a rematch with Martinez in my view. After that embarrassing performance from the Mexican Chavez Jr., he should be forced to earn a shot against Martinez by fighting a leading contender like Matthew Macklin to prove himself. That’s the fair way to do it.

If Arum puts Chavez Jr. back in with Martinez without having him prove that he deserves another fight with him, it’ll just look like a money grab by taking advantage of the tons of fans that purchased the fight for $49.99 last Saturday. Just because a fight makes money doesn’t mean that you should automatically set up a rematch regardless of how the fight went. This is a case where there really shouldn’t be an immediate rematch.

I have no problems about Chavez Jr. and Martinez fighting again, but only after Chavez Jr. proves that he belongs in the same ring with Martinez by beating someone good like Macklin. If Chavez Jr. can do that then I think he should get the rematch, but if he can’t beat Macklin or doesn’t want to fight him then he shouldn’t get the fight. The way Chavez Jr. fought last night, he looked like a novice in with a pro. It was so ugly and one-sided that it was hardly worth watching until Chavez Jr. got lucky in the 12th.
