By Steven Ocallaghan: The stats say that up and coming American heavyweight Deontay Wilder is going to have a very promising career. Some even mentioning him as possibly the new Mike Tyson.
The stats say with Wilder on 24 wins with 24 stoppages compared to Iron Mike with 24 wins and 22 stoppages at the time, but for me, that’s where it ends. Tyson by the age of 26 had fought against 15 top ten fighters with 11 fights being title fights. Remember Iron Mike was champ at only 21. From the age of 18, guys were very wary of taking a fight against Tyson. Wilder at 26 has still to fight a guy in the top 150 while still being ranked outside the top 50 himself.
A more serious contender for me is Seth Mitchell. Not as many KOs but still a good record. His last 3 wins in particular have been of a good standard taking care of decent fighters like Chazz Witherspoon, Timur Ibragimov and Evans Quinn. All stoppages.
Ibragimov has fought and beaten Oliver McCall but lost a split decision to ex cruiser weight champ and heavyweight title challenger Jean Marc Mormeck. Evans Quinn was also in a tough fight with ex champ Siarhei Liakhovich.
Mitchell has been fighting at a higher level and for me shows more promise.
A Mitchell v Wilder scrap would be one I’d like to see, America needs a good heavyweight fight, and I think it’s one that could easily be made. If it happens, by the end of the fight, for me the referee will be holding Mitchell’s fist in the air.
