By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Tyson Fury (18-0, 13 KO’s) is slowly inching his career along with one easy opponent after another. Sadly, Fury’s fight against 38-year-old Vinny Maddalone (35-7, 26 KO’s) on July 7th will be a sizable step up in class for the listed 6’9″ Fury.
For whatever reason, Fury is being put in the slow lane to get him ready for an eventual title fight against one of the champions. At the rate he’s going, the Klitschko brothers will be their rocking chairs by the time Fury faces his first champion.
I guess that’s a good thing for Fury, because if they put him in with the Klitschko brothers or even WBA champ Alexander Povetkin right now, I see Fury getting decimated. Maybe it’s wise that Fury keeps scouting out the old ones. In his last fight he defeated 41-year-old Martin Rogan in what turned out to be a joke of a fight with Fury fighting in the southpaw stance the entire fight. By doing that, Fury made the bout look like a sparring session rather than a real fight. But at least Fury got to win his cherished Irish heavyweight title.
I think Maddalone is out of his class in this fight, because he doesn’t have the size, speed or power to give Fury a lot of problems. However, Maddalone still has decent power and if he really go after Fury in the first three rounds, I think Maddalone will have a slight chance of winning the fight.
It’s not unrealistic to see Maddalone knocking the fragile-chinned Fury out if he goes all out early in the fight. But he’s going to have to load up with all of his shots to get Fury out of there. He can’t mess around and let Fury dictate the pace of the fight because he’ll get torn apart if Fury is the only one throwing punches.
