Froch is getting too much credit for his win over Bute

Image: Froch is getting too much credit for his win over ButeBy Scott Gilfoid: After a couple of days of hearing a lot of Carl Froch’s going overboard with praise for the man because of his victory over IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, I think boxing fans need to put the pipe down and slowly take a step back to clear the brain fog a little. Froch didn’t beat the greatest fighter in the super middleweight division, let’s be clear on that.

And if we want to be technical about it, I think Froch should have lost the fight because of his promoter gleefully rushing into the ring while Bute was being given a standing eight count by the referee. Did you see how quickly Froch’s promoter rushed back out of the ring when he saw that Bute was still being given the standing eight count? He looked like a sprinter. It was comical. The guy looked like he just got a hot foot. After Froch’s promoter left the ring, then Bute’s corner-man stepped in the ring and walked up to the referee to have the fight stopped.

Let’s put that aside a minute and look at what Froch really accomplished here. Froch basically beat a guy whose best opponent up until that point in his career was 43-year-old Glen Johnson. Bute was completely untested, so it’s not like Froch really accomplished anything. He beat a guy that can punch, but whose chin isn’t the best. Let’s be real about this. Froch didn’t beat Andre Ward, and he doesn’t want any part of fighting him again for reason. Froch didn’t beat Anthony Dirrell, and he didn’t beat Andre Dirrell last Saturday.

Those guys are speedy, with excellent power and incredible defensive skills. Froch couldn’t land his right hand all night long in his controversial win over Andre Dirrell in Nottingham in 2009. The only way Froch could land his rights is when he was in a clinch with Dirrell. That was basically it. Okay, so essentially what we’re looking at here is a fighter that has won three out of his last six fights. Froch got beat by Mikkel Kessler, Ward and in my eyes Andre Dirrell. Heck, that’s only a 500 fighter. Do you call that good?

Yeah, I know Froch’s fans think he schooled Dirrell and that’s pretty sad that they could see that fight and come to that kind of upside down conclusion. But the thing is people outside of the UK who don’t give a fig about whether Dirrell won or lost against Froch, still thought Froch got a hometown decision against Dirrell. So what does that tell you?

The way I see it, Froch has lost three out of his last six fights, and now he’s picked up a win over a fighter with little experience against the upper level of the division. I don’t see that as a big deal. Bute wasn’t ready for that kind of fight and made some critical mistakes. He failed to adapt to what Froch was doing. He should have gotten a clue after the first round but he didn’t, and I guess Bute deserves to lose because of that. But it’s not the kind of win where you can say that Froch is the best in the division, because he’s not. He beat Bute, and that’s it. If that had been Ward in the ring with Froch last Saturday night, I have no doubts Froch would have been whipped again just like he was last time he fought him. If that Anthony and Andre Dirrell in there, Froch would have struggled and lost as well. He wouldn’t have been able land his painfully slow right hands, and his flurries wouldn’t be hitting either. Additionally, the Dirrell brothers wouldn’t be stupid enough to back up against the ropes and just stand there helplessly like Bute was doing.

I can’t see that Froch accomplished anything last Saturday night, and the thing of it is, HE STILL should have been disqualified in my view because of his promoter stepping into the ring. I see that fight as having big asterisk next to it because of how out of control it was at the very end.
