Image: Sykes gets his 3 minutes of fame against Broner on May 19thBy Scott Gilfoid: American artist Andy Warhol once said “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Unfortunately, I think we’re going to have to cut that short by say 12 minutes to 3 minutes for Brit Gary Sykes (20-2, 5 KO’s) when he gets his big chance to fight for the title on May 19th against WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 28-year-old Sykes will be seen my massive amounts of Americans who will be watching the Broner-Sykes fight on HBO as part of the Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson rematch. In addition to that, the fight will be seen by many British fans who will be seeing on the undercard while waiting for Khan and Peterson to fight. The problem for Sykes is he’s not an actual top tier fighter, but rather one that was hand-picked by Broner’s promoters Golden Boy Promotions.

I don’t mind seeing the Brits get tossed a bone every now and then, but this is ridiculous. Golden Boy tossed a sirloin steak to the Brits with this fight. Matching the ultra-talented Broner with a domestic level Brit like Sykes isn’t what I consider sporting. If Sykes can’t even cut it at the domestic level, how in the world can he beat a talented fighter like Broner? He can’t. He’s going to get royally slaughtered on May 19th, and it won’t be interesting.

I see this as a nice 3 minute fight where Broner comes out, toys with Sykes much in the same way that a big cat would toy with mouse before putting it out of it’s misery and eating it. I mean, Broner is going to really clown Sykes before he puts the boom on him. I just hope he carries the guy for at least four or five rounds so the boxing world can see Broner’s marvelous Mayweather-like talent before he finishes him off.
