Image: Fury: Rogan will be begging me to put him out of his miseryBy Scott Gilfoid: Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s) figures that 40-year-old Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s) will be begging to be delivered from the pain he’s suffering by being put out of his misery on Saturday night in their fight for the vacant Irish heavyweight strap at the Odyssey Arena, in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Fury, 23, thinks all it will take for Rogan to be ready to go is to tap him with a couple of hard jabs.

Fury said to Irish-boxing.com “When I hit Martin Rogan with a couple of left jabs, he’s going to be begging for the right hand to knock him out. It’s going to be crazy.”

It sounds like wishful thinking on Fury’s part. I see this as a toss-up fight. Both guys are beatable in different ways. Fury has a glass chin, and one good hit from Rogan could have Fury flopping around on the canvas like a big fish out of water trying to find his way back to sea. While Rogan suffers eye swelling at the drop of the hat, and you never know when he’s going to get some kind of ailment that will cripple his performance in the ring. I mean, he’s 40-years-old and that’s ancient for boxing.

But Rogan will have his chance to win this fight in the first six rounds with his right hand. Rogan reminds me South African knockout puncher Gerrie Coetzee, a fighter that didn’t have great size at 6’2 215lbs, but he could really punch with his right hand. Coetzee went on to win and briefly hold the WBA heavyweight world title. Rogan has the same kind of power, and like Coetzee, Rogan is vulnerable when the fights into the later rounds. This is why Rogan has got to let his his hands go early and look for Fury’s china chin.

Fury is pretty limited in terms of power. Rogan won’t have to worry about getting hit with anything big from Fury nor will he have to worry about Fury’s jab too much. Fury doesn’t have the jab that Sam Sexton has. Rogan was jabbed silly by Sexton in his two losses to him in 2009. Fury won’t even try to really jab much. He’ll probably follow in with whatever Rogan is doing. So if Rogan is trying to fight in close, Fury will likely give up his height and reach and try to go toe-to-toe at close range. This will give Rogan countless opportunities to try and land his big right on Fury’s chin.
