(Photo credit: KMG/Dmitriy Abramov) By William Mackay: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is going to make challenger Dereck Chisora pay for his slap during Friday’s weigh-in. Chisora slapped Vitali with a hard right hand when the two fighters came face to face after their weigh-ins for their fight on Saturday night in Munich, Germany.
Vitali didn’t strike Chisora back but he was clearly very angry about getting hit with a cheap shot. A slap is considered an insult and runs with the theme that Chisora has been showing all throughout the build-up to this fight. Chisora has shown zero respect for Vitali, calling him “Boring” and saying that he’s bad for boxing. The slap seemed to the final straw unless Chisora has something else planned on Saturday night.
In the past, Chisora has kissed an opponent during a face to face and during a fight he bit an opponent. A move like that on Saturday night will likely lead to Chisora being immediately disqualified, fined heavily and suspended from boxing for a duration of time.
One would hope Chisora won’t take it to that degree to try and get a mental edge in the fight, but you never know. He’s done it against fighters that he really didn’t need to because he was a lot better than them. He’s not better than Vitali and may look for an easy way out.
Vitali said this about the slap via sportsillustrated.cnn.com: “I am going to hit back on Saturday. He will get his beating.”
Chisora’s slap may have been done for a number of reasons: A. to get the most attention possible from the media. B. to get Vitali to brawl in all out fashion that could give Chisora a slightly better chance of winning or C. Chisora may want the beating to end quickly and the best way to do that would be to enrage Vitali. The worst thing to happen would be for Vitali to string the beating along for 10 to 12 rounds like he’s done against guys like Albert Sosnowski, Chris Arreola, Tomasz Adamek and Shannon Briggs. Those fighters took a lot of punishment due to the extended bludgeoning Vitali gave them. Chisora might want the fight to end quickly so he won’t have to suffer as long. Getting Vitali angry would seem to be the best method to ensure he doesn’t get whipped for too long.
