Image: Huck-Povetkin winner must fight 39-year-old Rahman nextBy Allen Fox: According to fightnews.com, the winner of the February 25th bout between WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KO’s) and his cruiserweight challenger Marco Huck (34-1, 5 KO’s) has only 120 days to defend the strap against 39-year-old former IBF/WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman (50-7-2, 41 KO’s), who is the current World Boxing Association #1 ranked contender for the title.

Huck, 27, had been hoping to take a win over Povetkin and immediately go straight into a fight with one of the Klitschko brothers for a huge payday fight. But having to take an additional step before that fight against the hard hitting Rahman, that may not be something that Huck will be looking forward to doing.

Huck can always give Rahan a step aside payment to get him out of the way so that Huck can go on and fight one of the Klitschkos. That might be the best choice for Huck to make, because Rahman is a better puncher than Povetkin and he could have enough left to KO Huck, Of course, Huck still has to beat Povetkin to get to that stage where it’s going to be an issue for him. Povetkin is considered the favorite to win the Huck-Povetkin fight but not a heavy favorite.

Povetkin would probably do well against Rahman because of his sturdy chin and high work rate. That might actually be a good title milking fight for Povetkin to take. He’s already milking his title with his win over 42-year-old Cedric Boswell. And some boxing fans see the Huck fight as a milk job for Povetkin, because he’s facing a cruiserweight and not someone ranked in the top 15 by the World Boxing Council or any of the other sanctioning bodies in the heavyweight division. There are really only a small handful of top fighters that the WBC has ranked that Povetkin has to really worry about.
