Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy, says the fight could also take place in another venue.

Khan’s management has appealed his 12 round split decision loss to the IBF and WBA, as well as the Washington State Athletic Commission. It’s unclear if the $1 million offer would still stand if the decision is reversed and Khan is given the win. One would guess that the money offer would be lowered because Khan would have his titles back and would be considered the winner, if only in the eyes of Golden Boy and whichever sanctioning bodies decides to overturn the results.

Schaefer and Golden Boy want to get the rematch between Khan and Peterson agreed and signed as soon as possible. They won’t want Peterson to wriggle free and go in another direction towards a fight against someone like WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, although it hardly matters whether Peterson slips a fight in between or not. However, Khan is in a big hurry to get this fight out of the way so he can quickly move up in weight to the welterweight division to where Khan has ideas of trying to get a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Khan may get that fight, but he of course won’t win it.

His performance against Peterson last weekend showed clearly that Khan has huge technical gaps in his game that would be exploited by a quality fighter like Mayweather Jr. As bad as Khan looked, it wouldn’t just take Mayweather to do it. Half a dozen of the best welterweights would give Khan tremendous troubles. But that’s kind of neither here nor there. Perhaps the biggest attraction for a Khan-Mayweather fight for Khan and for Golden Boy Promotions is simply the payday that all would receive.

It would be a like a huge cash out fight. Khan would get beat badly, but would get a nice payday. He’s not ready for Mayweather but that doesn’t matter. The money would still be there. Golden Boy and Khan want to make this fight happen as soon as possible; perhaps fearing that Mayweather won’t be around too much longer.
