Image: Khan: Mayweather has agreed to fight meBy William Mackay: It looks like IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) has finally gotten his big wish. Floyd Mayweather Jr. has agreed to fight him, Khan said to Sky Sports News. Of course, Mayweather saying he’ll fight Khan doesn’t mean he actually will, so hopefully Khan doesn’t get his hopes up too much and end up getting deflated when the fight doesn’t materialize next year.

Speaking with Sky Sports News, Khan said “Talks have already taken place and Mayweather has agreed to fight me. But we can’t look too far ahead because we’ve got Lamont Peterson and then I want to move up to 147 and have one fight at that weight. Talks have been..Mayweather is keen to take the fight on. It’ll be a huge fight. It’s a timing game. It’s the time now where a young, hungry fighter comes up and takes on the older, experienced guy out.”

Khan sounds a little delusional here. Mayweather isn’t so old to where he’ll be beaten by a limited fighter like Khan. I think Mayweather would need to age another six to eight more years for a fighter like Khan to be able to beat him.

Even if Mayweather does intend on fighting Khan there’s a lot that can go wrong before now and 2012, such as Khan getting knocked cold by his next opponent challenger Lamont Peterson on December 10th. Peterson isn’t a shot fighter like Khan’s last opponent Zab Judah, and he’s not a slow and non-puncher like Paul McCloskey, who Khan defeated by a 6th round technical decision last April.

Peterson is a whole new ball game for Khan and it’s fight that could either way. If Khan does beat Peterson, Khan will be looking to get a fight in at welterweight so that he can get acclimated to the division before facing Mayweather. Welterweight contender Kell Brook (24-0, 16 KO’s) has been mentioned as a possible Khan opponent.

I seriously doubt Khan will fight someone as dangerous as Brook with a big money fight against Mayweather on the line, but if Khan is brave enough to fight Brook, we could see Khan get derailed right there. Brook has decent power and is good enough to beat Khan if he lands anything big against the fragile-chinned Khan. My guess is Khan will face a weak toothless old lion at welterweight before taking on Mayweather and getting humiliated in a one-sided loss.
