By Chris Williams: I’m sure all of us have done things in the past that we’ve regretted. I think Manny Pacquiao may have the same kind of thing when he looks back at some of his training routines such as letting someone hit him over and over again with a small club. I can’t think of a more ridiculous looking training routine than this one. It’s silly.
I don’t see how it can get a fighter ready for taking body shots or simulate what happens when you’re in the head of battle. To me it seems more like a wasted torture routine that can hurt a fighter more than help. Just look at it. Pacquiao lets some guy tag him with a little club to the midsection over and over again. The only good I can see out of it is some kind of manhood thing similar to jumping in an ice hole in a big lake.
Sure, it proves that you’re fearless but what’s the point? Where’s the science behind this that proves that it’s worthwhile to do? I don’t think it’s a smart thing to do to have some punish your midsection like this. A better way to get used to getting hit in the midsection is to have someone actually punching you there, don’t you think?
I’ve seen Antonio Margarito do this practice as well and thought it was pretty silly when he was doing it, but I didn’t think Pacquiao would waste time on it as well. Doesn’t his trainer Freddie Roach have something a little more modern to get Pacquiao ready for taking body shots from Juan Manuel Marquez?
I think this is a really bad move by Pacquiao. I guess it’s harmless as long as he’s not sustaining injuries, but it seems more like punishment without any real point. I think Pacquiao’s time would be better spent on learning how to protect himself by blocking body shots or working on his footwork. I’ve noticed that Pacquio doesn’t move as well as he used to. He needs to be working on that rather wasting time having someone give him a pink belly with a little club.
