By Chris Williams: WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) says he’s okay with fighting IBF bantamweight champion Abner Mares (22-0, 13 KO’s) in a unification bout, according to the latest boxing news from Philboxing.com. If the fight can be worked out between Donaire’s Top Rank promoter and Mares’ promoters from Golden Boy Promotions, Donaire says he’d do it.
For me, I’d much rather see this fight than watch Mares go over old ground and fight Joseph Agbeko again in a rematch. There’s no point in fighting him again, because Agbeko lost. All the fuss that’s being made about Mares landing a handful of low blows is pointless and takes away from his impressive performance. Most of the low blows occurred because Agbeko was draped around Mares’ neck, pulling his head down. With a guy hanging on your neck, of course you’re going to hit him low every now and then.
I think Mares would beat Donaire if he gets the chance and I’d like to see that. Donaire has problems in fighters that pressure him the way that Mares likes to pressure. Look at what Rafael Concepcion was able to do to Donaire in their fight in August 2009. He battered Donaire and had him on the run with the little bit of pressure he put on him. Concepcion created the blue print on how to beat Donaire in that fight, all Mares has to do is follow that game plan he’s got Donaire beat. Yes, I’d like to see this fight. Donaire is good at dishing it out but he can’t take it when he’s getting tagged. Mares would be all over him all night long with his fast shots and powerful punches. I can see a knockout in this fight.
Donaire is planning on fighting on October 22nd against a still to be determined opponent. He’s going to be moving up in weight after that to the super bantamweight division but he might temporarily change his mind if enough money is waived under his snoot for a fight against Mares.
