Khan should look to fight Bradley next, rather than Erik Morales

By Dallan O’ Donnell: After his stunning display against Zab Judah at the Mandalay Bay on Saturday, Amir Khan has a decision to make on his next opponent, and according to his legendary trainer Freddie Roach, Khan should fight unbeaten WBC/WBO light-welterweight champion Timothy Bradley rather than taking on the great but aging Erik Morales.

This shows how much faith Roach has in his fighter that he would trust him in such a major contest when a mega fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. looms on the horizon.

Khan, 24, had been in talks with Bradley before taking the Judah fight but these talks broke down when Bradley reportedly asked for the larger split in the purse as at the time, he had more titles than Khan. Now Khan holds all the cards as he proved he truly is the best fighter in his division and this was echoed by Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Khans promoter Golden Boy, who said: ‘Bradley needs us more than we need him’.

Despite this Khan should test himself as much as possible before possibly taking on Mayweather in 12 months time. Roach has that much confidence in Khan that he said he would take Khan to beat Mayweather now. Golden Boy had a 3 fight plan for Khan with the Bolton banger taking on Morales next, a bout with hot prospect and fellow countryman Kell Brook in Britain, which would all culminate in the big one against Mayweather which according to Mayweather could be held in Wembley.

Khan has America in the palm of his hand, they have taken a real liking to his come forward style of fighting and his state side fan base has grown even larger than that back home. It is hard to understand why he is more popular in America than England, but it could all possibly stem from his bout with Paul McCloskey. Khan and McCloskey were scheduled to fight on Sky PPV but poor sales led Sky to pulling the fight from PPV and downgrading it to normal Sky Sports viewing. Khan didn’t like this and jumped ship to primetime PPV which didn’t sit well with English fans as the fight was billed as Khans homecoming.

Despite this Khan has a chance to redeem himself if he does fight Kell Brook which could be a classic domestic clash and if he can manage to bring Floyd Mayweather to Wembley he should have a fan base Ricky Hatton would be proud of. For such a young man, Khan is in a position that the likes of Mayweather or Manny Pacquaio weren’t in at his age. He is more advanced than both of them at this stage in his career. This mixed in with how Khan is fighting, proves he is undoubtedly the future of boxing.
