40-year-old Martin Rogan ready to take on Tyson Fury

By Sean McDaniel: 40-year-old Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s) has accepted the challenge by British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (15-0, 10 KO’s) to fight him next. Rogan, who lost two out of his last four fights and looked horrible even in his victories, wants to fight Fury in Ireland, which would make it a home fight for Rogan.

I told (Fury’s promoter) Mick Hennessy that a fight between me and Tyson would sell out the Odyssey Arena in Belfast,” Rogan said to newsletter.co.uk. “It’s the type of fight the public is crying out for. We could throw the Irish and Celtic titles in for good measure – it could be one of the greatest Irish heavyweight fights in history.”

It would be a mismatch. It’s too bad that Fury is going after an easy fight like this to pad his bank account rather than facing someone that can actually test him and teach him something. Rogan is short, old and slow. It’s not a fight that the 6’9″ Fury can get anything from that will help him progress as a fighter.

Fury defeated Derek Chisora last Saturday night in a 12 round decision win. Fury showed a lot of progress in that fight with his movement, jabs and combinations. He looked 100% compared to how he performed in fights against John McDermott. But to fight a guy like Rogan, that’s a backwards move for Fury instead of one where he’s moving forward and looking to get better.

Rogan was stopped twice by Chisora victim Sam Sexton twice in 2009. Rogan has since rebounded from the loses with two wins over C level fighters Werner Kreiskott (11-17-1, 8 KO’s) and Yavor Marinchev (7-22, 4 KO’s).
