Image: Pacquiao-Marquez III at 145 lbs, says KonczBy Dan Ambrose: If a third fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez is going to be taking place, it’s not going to be having much of a catchweight involved with it. Pacquiao’s close adviser Michael Koncz reportedly said that a third fight between Pacquiao and Marquez will have a catchweight of no less than 145 lbs. In other words, there isn’t going to be a catchweight because Pacquiao has been coming into his recent welterweight fights at around 145.

If Marquez wants the Pacquiao fight, he will be forced to move up in weight 10 lbs to make the fight. That’s a significant amount of weight to put on for a fighter as old Marquez, who will be turning 38 soon. Asking someone that old to come up in weight 10 pounds is really putting them at a disadvantage. I suppose Marquez will take the fight under those conditions anyway because he probably wants the payday. But that’s not exactly much of a catchweight.

Pacquiao’s team might as well have told Marquez to stuff it in regards to a catchweight fight, because fighting a lightweight at 145 isn’t a catchweight as far as I’m concerned. I guess by saying that it’s a catchweight fight, it will sound like Pacquiao and his team are bending over backwards trying to accommodate the smaller Marquez but if you look at what a 145 pound catchweight would really amount to, it’s pretty much a joke. If Marquez has any pride, he should walk away from this deal and go after fighters that are willing to fight him near his own weight rather than having him bulk up to their weight.
