Mayweather-Pacquiao: Can these two men ever be replaced in the sport of boxing?

By Rafa Garcia: I write this article due to the fan mania, controversy and never-ending debate surrounding these two unique fighters. These two fighters are not only known for there talent in the ring but there personalities outside of it. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is recognized not only for his limitless talent inside the ring, but his far reaching charity work and position in congress. Nothing seems too much for the humble Pacquiao when endearing himself to the wider public.

As we travel to the other end of the spectrum we will find Floyd “Money” Mayweather, flash, brash and undeniably talented inside the ring, surrounded by controversy and a man that does things his own way. Mayweather is also involved in charity work i may add. Mayweather has not always been embraced by the sporting world or the public, but his personality along with his gift inside the ring has pulled in huge amounts of fans for the sport of boxing over the years. It is quite clear these two fighters are the main attraction to boxing and have been for the last decade, my worry is both Pacquiao and Mayweather are coming to the end of there illustrious careers and it seems the sport is lacking talented, charismatic fighters who are ready to take over the reigns and keep boxing at the forefront of combat sport.

Boxing needs a revamp, let the fans relive the times when the best fought the best and future stars and personalities emerged, recently i watched Andre Berto-Victor Ortiz and what a cracker it turned out to be enthralling from the outset, both fought to the best of there abilities and looked hungry for the win, yet we are back to square one with Ortiz no nearer a fight that will further his career or test him as Berto did. The welter-weight division has four current world champions Vyacheslav Senchenko (WBA), Victor Ortiz (WBC), Dejan Zavek (IBF) Manny Pacquiao (WBO). The ruling body’s of boxing should now be looking at 2 world title fights Pacquiao-Zavek, Senchenko-Ortiz with the winners taking part in a unification bout, this structure promotes a fight in the best way while building interest in fans for the huge unification bout that will take place. If boxing does not change the structure of rankings, fights and take some control away from promoters i feel it will be a sad time for boxing when either Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao call time on there fight careers.
