By William Mackay: Top heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek is currently looking forward to challenging WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on September 10th at the Wroclaaw stadium in Poland in what would be a mega fight for the two fighters. On paper, Adamek has zero chance of winning that fight unless the 39-year-old Vitali suffers some kind of debilitating age related injury in that fight.
However, there’s another thing that could ruin Adamek’s big chance at a cash out fight before he even gets it and that’s if WBA heavyweight champion David Haye beats IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in their fight on July 2nd in Hamburg, Germany. The Klitschkos have it worked out to the effect that if Wladimir loses to Haye, Vitali will then move in to face Haye before he retires in October.
You can’t blame Haye or Vitali for taking this fight, because a Haye vs. Vitali revenge match would so much bigger than a fight between Vitali and Adamek. There is no comparison. Adamek is a fighter that has only had a handful of fights at heavyweight and has taken on a number of aging guys and/or weaker heavyweights. He’s faced one decent heavyweight in Chris Arreola with the rest being either old guys or fringe contenders. A fight between Vitali and Adamek can wait. A fight between Vitali and Haye can’t.
With Haye on his way out of the sport by the end of the year, the Klitschkos would have to move quickly to grab that opportunity before it disappears. If Wladimir loses to Haye, it’s not as interesting to see Wladimir facing Haye again compared to seeing Haye fight Vitali for a revenge fight. Also, by having Wladimir facing Haye a second time, we could end up with the same result of seeing Wladimir knocked out again. This is why it’s better for Vitali to forget about the Adamek fight, which is what many people think Vitali would do, and then take on Haye to knock him out before Haye retires.
