Khan wants to unify titles in three divisions

By Sean McDaniel: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) wants to unify the titles in the light welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight divisions. Is this possible or Khan dreaming?

In a recent interview at the Daily Star, Khan said “I want to clean up at light welterweight, and then move up to welterweight and light welterweight…I want to unify divisions and fight the best. I have got time to do that.”

Can Khan unify the titles in these three divisions or will Khan look to pick and choose vulnerable champions to fight in each of these divisions and then make a claim that he unified the titles if he beats one or two of them? In looking at the welterweight division, you can immediately spot two champions that Khan would have a great chance in beating in Vyacheslav Senchenko and Jan Zaveck.

Would Khan go after them both and then claim he unified the titles rather than facing guys like Andre Berto and Manny Pacquiao. And, what about at junior middleweight? Would Khan go after champion Cornelius Bundradge and Saul Alvarez and perhaps get lucky and beat them by controversial decisions, and them claim that he unified the titles instead of facing Miguel Cotto and Sergiy Dzinziruk.

If Khan selects weaker champions to go after rather than the best champions in every division it’s going to be hard to take him seriously. Khan has got to take on the best fighters every time out, and he needs to try and fight Zab Judah before moving up in weight.
