Image: Sergio Martinez makes a case that he should be the #1 pound-for-pound fighter, replacing PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: After three huge wins in the past year, WBC Emeritus middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (47-2-2, 26 KO’s) has to be seriously considered as the new #1 pound-for-pound fighter in boxing after his impressive wins over Kelly Pavlik, Paul Williams and Sergiy Dzinziruk.

I’m sorry but Manny Pacquiao’s accomplishments in the past couple of years just haven’t measured up to what Martinez has accomplished. Martinez has reduced three very good fighters to rubble and done it an impressive fashion. In contrast, Pacquiao has beaten Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, and Antonio Margarito. Cotto is a flawed fighter that a lot of people see as shot fighter, and the same goes for Margarito.

Clottey is just someone that briefly held the IBF welterweight title after beating the much smaller Zab Judah to get the belt. Clottey was then beaten in his very next fight against Cotto.

I think the Ring’s pound for pound ratings need some minor adjustments with Pacquiao moved from #1 to #4, behind #1 Martinez, #2 Floyd Mayweather Jr., #3 Nonito Donaire. Once Pacquiao starts facing some younger guys that are fighting on a high level and not coming off of recent losses or poor performances, then perhaps I can see Pacquiao being moved up a slot or two. But with Pacquiao fighting guys like 39-year-old Shane Mosley, who many people think is totally shot, it’s hard to see me moving Pacquiao up anytime soon. If he keeps fighting washed up guys, I think he should be moved down even further to #6 behind Juan Manuel Marquez in the #5 slot.
