By Dan Ambrose: If WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) wants an opportunity to prove that he’s one of the best fighters in the world then he’s got the perfect opportunity against WBC Emeritus champion Sergio Martinez, who expressed interest in fighting Cotto next if he’s willing to take the fight.
Martinez destroyed an over-matched Sergiy Dzinziruk last Saturday night in Connecticut, knocking Dzinziruk down an incredible five times before the fight was stopped in the 8th round. What many people thought would be a competitive chess match turned out to be a huge mismatch due to Martinez’s powerful left hand and hard jabs.
After the fight, Martinez said “Cotto would be a good fight. If Cotto is man enough, he will ask to fight Sergio Martinez.” Don’t count on Cotto taking a fight with Martinez because right now Martinez is fighting on a whole different level and I’m not talking about weight classes. Martinez is simply too right now and would make a mess of Cotto if his promoter Bob Arum was bold enough to put Cotto in with Martinez.
Instead of Martinez, Cotto is looking to fight Antonio Margarito next in July. Margarito is considered a shot fighter in the minds of many boxing fans, but then again Cotto is considered shot as well by some fans. Martinez isn’t shot and would be an almost guaranteed loss for Cotto at this point. Martinez-Cotto would be a much better fight because Margarito has lost two out of his last three fights and it’s hard for boxing fans to take him seriously with him getting beaten left and right.
