Saul Alvarez to fight Ryan Rhodes next

By William Mackay: There is talk that newly crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez will be facing top contender Ryan Rhodes next rather than somebody known like Alfredo Angulo, Paul Williams or Kermit Cintron, according to fight news.

If Alvarez is looking to take on someone he can beat, then Rhodes is the way to go. Rhodes has been fighting 2nd tier opponents much of his career and this is a bad fighter for Rhodes all of a sudden to be stepping it up against.

Rhodes would be like fighting Matthew Hatton again, except that instead of sticking around for 12 rounds and sopping up punishment all night long, Rhodes will get whipped out fast. It’s a nice safe fight for Alvarez compared to the risk involved with fighting Cintron, Vanes Martirosyan or Williams.

If Alvarez just wants to hold on to his paper title for as long as he milk it, then Rhodes should be his next fight. Alvarez can then figure out who is another easy mark after the Rhodes fight. I would steer clear of Williams, Martirosyan and Alfredo Angulo, though. Cintron might be the best option for Alvarez after the Rhodes slaughter.

As far as entertaining action goes, I hate the Alvarez-Rhodes fight because it’s going to be such a huge mismatch. We’re talking about a British fighter with not a lot of power and a lot of mileage on him from facing 2nd tier guys. That’s not a good recipe for an interesting fight. I’d rather be entertained than watching one poor guy get brutalized by a bigger, stronger fighter like Alvarez.
