By Jason Kim: It wasn’t a pretty sight seeing the tall skinny Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KO’s) laid out on the canvas, out cold in the 2nd round after getting caught with a straight left hand from WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on November 20th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Williams never saw the punch coming and was knocked out badly, and left on the canvas with both eyes wide open. Since that defeat, there’s been talk of Williams moving back down to the welterweight division so that he wouldn’t have to face guys that can punch as hard as Martinez.
However, there’s also talk of Williams being interested in trying to avenge his defeat and looking to take on Martinez for a third time. Williams beat Martinez by a questionable 12 round majority decision in December 2009. Williams perhaps sees that outcome and thinks he would have a chance against Martinez in a third fight.
It might not be the smartest thing for Williams to try his luck a third time, because he doesn’t have the punching power to trade with Martinez and there’s a good chance that Williams’s chin may have been affected by his bad knockout loss. The last thing that Williams needs right now is to go back into a third fight with Martinez and get knocked out again.
Another bad knockout loss for Williams would put his career at risk. Williams is better off facing smaller and weaker welterweights like Andre Berto, Shane Mosley and Mike Jones rather than risk his neck in a third fight with Martinez.
