By Joe Met: It is disappointing to say the least to be reading about David haye’s trainer/manager/promoter/nanny/boyfriend, Adam Booth talking about Jean-marc Mormeck as a likely next opponent for Haye. I have always been a fan of David Haye. He unified the cruiserweight division by knocking out all the competition. He was always entertaining to watch. He possesses Speed, power, and genuine talent.
When he ran out of decent competition at cruiser, he then moved up to heavyweight, took the title from the beast that is Nikolay Valuev and promised to clear up the division. It all sounded very promising for the fans, But at some point we have to start questioning his level of opponent.
It’s bad news that Wladimir opted to go ahead with his fight against Dereck Chisora instead of a unification bout with Haye, I’m sure many will see things differently, but as far as I can see Haye did everything he could to make that fight happen, but Wlad just wasn’t ever going to go for it. He would rather retire with his titles in a year or two having not really ever put them on the line against the most dangerous in the division, than lose them in a knockout loss to Haye. Can you imagine how Wlad would feel having to retire with no titles, another knock out loss on his record, and David Haye sitting pretty on the top of the pile as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world? When you think about it, you can’t really blame him for not wanting to take the risk, but to be honest I expected more of David Haye than to criticise Wlad for running away from a genuine, competitive fight, and then go and adopt the same tactics himself.
After the embarrassing farce that was the Audley Harrison fight, then to name a fighter outside the top 10 rankings who he has fought and beaten before at a lower weight class as his next opponent, it has become clear to me that Haye has learned from Wlad that it might just be better to coast towards a very wealthy retirement without taking any unnecessary risks and ensuring that they go out of the game with a belt still around their waists. I’m sorry David, But you can’t seriously expect us to believe that Mormeck is a genuine heavyweight contender. He’s an easy option, for an easy defence and an easy pay check.
What next for Haye? Is he going to hire Wembley stadium and dig up Macarinelli for a second beating and tell us all its another great all-british super fight that the fans have been asking for? No doubt if the newspapers got behind it like they did the Fraudley farce, it would be a sell out.
It’s a shame for boxing as a sport and for the fans who pay their hard earned money and devote their time to following the sport because it seems the days of professional athletes competing to be the very best are a thing of the far distant past and they have been replaced with a bunch of business men who just want to find the easiest possible way of earning the largest amount of money that they can. There is no pride, there is no honour, they just don’t care enough about being the best, and while we are sitting here hoping that these massive fights happen and that they breathe life back into the sport that we love, the likes of Wlad, Haye, and Floyd Jr are all sat there with their massive piles of cash, laughing their heads off at the poor saps who were stupid enough to buy into their bullshit, and knowing that these fights were never going to happen. Because they never wanted these fights in the first place.
