By Dan Ambrose: Photo credit – Zanfer Boxing: Although unbeaten middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) has only beaten one semi-decent fighter and zero really good fighters during his eight-year pro career, his fight against the light hitting junior middleweight Billy Lyell (22-8, 4 KO’s) this Saturday night in Culiacan, Mexico, is expected to draw 10,000 boxing fans, according to Fight News.
These are incredible numbers for a fight against a fringe junior middleweight contender like Lyell. You would expect numbers like that from a big fight, not a bout against the little known Lyell. What this shows you is that Chavez Jr., the son of the boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez, is able to capitalize on the fame of his father. You can’t say that Chavez Jr. has accomplished much during his career because his best win up until now was a 12 round decision over John Duddy last year in June. Duddy was a very mediocre fighter and beating him isn’t that big of a deal.
If Chavez Jr. beats Lyell, he’s going to be given a fight against WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik next. The WBC has Chavez Jr. ranked number #1, and it seems like they made things easy for him to capture the WBC title by getting Sergio Martinez out of the way by making him WBC champion Emeritus.
If Chavez Jr. can’t win a paper title now with the way that the WBC has juiced him up to succeed, then it’s just not meant to be for Chavez. Even if he does win the WBC title, it’s going to be nearly impossible for Chavez Jr. to hold onto the title for long unless he’s able to keep away from Martinez and unbeaten middleweight contender David Lemieux. I see both of those fighters destroying Chavez Jr. when/if they fight him.
It won’t be easy getting a fight with Chavez Jr. once he becomes the WBC champion. I see it taking forever before Lemieux ever gets a shot at facing Chavez Jr. and as far as Martinez goes, I can’t see him ever getting a chance to fight him. The WBC has moved Martinez out of the way of Chavez Jr. and I see him staying out of the way so that Chavez Jr. can control the title for awhile.
