By Jason Kim: Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KO’s) will return to action on January 22nd against 38-year-old Sherman Williams (34-11-2, 19 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Incredibly, the asking price for this pay-per-view bout will be $29.95. That number is kind of shocking given how old, depleted and average Holyfield is looking in recent years.
Holyfield hasn’t held a title since 2001, and it’s difficult to imagine having to pay to see a non-champion fight given all those years without a title. Holyfield is 48-years-old now, and has failed twice in the past three years in title challenges. Despite his bad luck, Holyfield remains committed to trying to recapture the heavyweight titles, and says he wants to unify all the heavyweight titles and then retire.
The chances of that happening in the manner are pretty much zero, because Holyfield will likely have a hard time convincing any of the heavyweight champions in giving him a shot. IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko already said he wouldn’t fight him. WBA heavyweight champion David Haye would face huge criticism if he faced another older heavyweight like Holyfield after recently beating 39-year-old Audley Harrison.
In Holyfield’s prime, he had wins over the likes of George Foreman, Ray Mercer, Mike Tyson, Michael Moorer, James Buster Douglas, Larry Holmes, Bert Cooper and Alex Stewart. However, it’s been quite some time since Holyfield last beat a top fighter. He’s currently lost two out of his last three fights. In his last bout, Holyfield stopped 42-year-old Francois Botha by an 8th round TKO in April.
