Image: Pacquiao vs. Margarito - Why didn’t anybody stop the fightBy Gerardo Granados: Antonio Margarito´s trainer Roberto Garcia allowed his fighter to take a vicious beating last Saturday night against Manny Pacquiao. Perhaps he thought Margarito could win in the final seconds of the fight. But what about the referee or the ringside doctor? It was clear that the underdog didn’t have the skills, speed or power to win, and as we all saw Margarito was taking too much punishment.

We all have seen that a title fight can be ended due to: one of the fighters refuses to continue during combat or before the start of the next round, corner stop the fight, referee stops the fight, three knockdown rule, the ringside doctor doesn’t allow a fighter to continue due to injuries suffered during the combat, as a sanctioned bout it can be stopped if the bout is clearly uneven; this is done to protect a fighter from getting seriously hurt or killed. Besides this bout was sanctioned by the WBC and the local boxing commission.

A warrior must be saved from himself, that is why it is the authority, referee, his corner or doctor duty to protect him. They must intervene to save the warrior when the fight is so uneven. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the fight, but after the seventh round my thirst of blood was satisfied; I was convinced that Margarito had no chance to beat Pacquiao and guessed that the referee would stop the fight on the next round, but no one stop the abuse. By the tenth round looks like Pacman slowdown his pace, just controlling the fight but still connecting hard shots on Margarito´s head and body, once he looked back at the referee like he was expecting the referee to stop the fight.

Margarito was not going to quit he is to proud full to do it, Alfonso Gomez was not going to quit against Miguel Angel Cotto and was the referee who save him from getting hurt; Shannon Briggs got beaten for twelve rounds and as Margarito suffered fractures and was hospitalized.

I hope Margarito heal fast, and don’t suffer permanent injuries due to this fight; it would be ironic that in a near future he showed signs of brain damage such as Parkinson.

Now Roach is saying that Margarito won’t be the same after this fight, why would he say such thing? I guess it is obvious to all that Pacquiao utterly beat him.

One thing is for sure; Margarito won’t be remembered for his illegal hand wraps anymore, now he will be remembered for the tremendous twelve round beating that Pacquiao gave him.
