Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?

Image: Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?By Chris Williams: I know trainer Freddie Roach has personally picked out three of his fighters – Amir Khan, Vanes Martirosyan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – to spar with Manny Pacquiao to get him prepared for Antonio Margarito on November 13th, but is this situation of Pacquiao doing Roach a favor by sparring with these guys rather than Pacquiao getting any real benefit out of it? Let’s be honest here. Chavez, Khan and Martirosyan are nothing like Margarito. I see absolutely nothing in common with them and the Mexican warrior in their style of fighting.

So why are they being used to spar with Pacquiao rather than someone else with a style closer to Margarito? I think Pacquiao is helping these guys more than he’s being helped. If I was Pacquiao, I’d boot all three of them out of the camp and give Roach instructions to find me a copycat of Margarito. I think Roberto Garcia is a much better copy of Margarito than Khan, Martirosyan and Chavez.

That’s the guy that Pacquiao needs to be sparring with. Paul Williams would be better, but they’re obviously not going to be able to get his services for sparring. Besides, Williams would likely overwhelm Pacquiao with punches and beat him up during every sparring session. We can’t have that, can we? But in all seriousness, I’d boot the current sparring partners out of camp and look for someone that’s just like Margarito.

Glen Tapia, Michael Media, Chavez, Khan, Martirosyan, none of those fighters are anything like Margarito. This is like Pacquiao is doing them a favor by sparring. Forget that, I’d tell Roach to send them packing and demand that he get me someone that is like Margarito.
