Chavez Jr. says he could fight Pacquiao in 2011

By Chris Williams: In a bout that would be splendidly awful to watch or even contemplate, middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) revealed that he could be facing Manny Pacquiao in 2011. In an article by Ricardo Lois at Examiner.com, Chavez Jr. gives his reasons why he won’t be traveling to the Philippines to spar with Pacquiao for his fight with Antonio Margarito on November 13th, saying “I’m getting ready for my fight against Alfonso Gomez on December 4th in Anaheim, California. I was supposed to go to the Phi;ippines and do sparring with Pacquiao, which is something very important for me, but at the same time, it has been said that Manny could be my opponent next year. And I think in helping him with sparring would be complicated.”

Oh brother. I wonder who planted the idea of a fight between Chavez and Pacquiao? Could it be Bob Arum told Chavez Jr. this? This is crazy, because the only way I can see Chavez Jr. getting a fight with Pacquiao is if they don’t match Chavez up with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto like they’ve been talking about. If Chavez fights Cotto, that’s a certain loss. I can’t see Chavez getting past that fight. Of course, if Chavez Jr. doesn’t that fight and continues to face either B level fighters or much smaller guys like welterweight Gomez, he’ll keep winning into next year and will be available to be slaughtered by Pacquiao in what likely be a horrible mismatch.

God, that would be such a terrible mismatch on epic proportions. I would compare it to Pacquiao’s fight with Ricky Hatton, but Chavez being as big as he is, he’ll probably be able to take at five or six rounds of getting blasted around by Pacquiao before he either gets stopped on his feet or on the canvas. But god why would even let Chavez Jr. fight Pacquiao without having him fight at least good fighter first. I don’t count John Duddy, because I see him as a 2nd tier fighter all the way.

Why don’t they match Chavez Jr. against one good middleweight like Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, David Liemieux, Matthew Macklin, Andy Lee, Fernando Guerrero or Paul Williams. If Chavez Jr. could beat any one of those fighters, then throw him in to be slaughtered by Pacquiao. But you can’t just have Chavez Jr. go from a fight against a welterweight like Gomez, and then have him get a shot at Pacquiao. That seems like trickery to me. Chavez’s record doesn’t have any real wins on other than B level fighters, and now he’s taking on a welterweight contender Gomez.
