Image: Wladimir Klitschko makes offer to fight ChisoraBy Jim Dower: In a Rocky movie type of situation, unbeaten British heavyweight Derek Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) has been given a once in a lifetime shot against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) for a bout on December 11th. Klitschko’s adviser Shelly Finkel reportedly contacted Chisora’s promoter Frank Warren on Thursday about a fight between Klitschko and Chisora. Warren now will have to decide whether the risk to Chisora is too great for the big payday that he would likely receive. It would be good money, but Wladimir could really wreck Chisora if the fight goes on too long.

It would be merciful if Wladimir takes Chisora out as soon as possible. That way, Chisora doesn’t have to get battered for too long the way that Klitschko’s last opponent former WBC heavyweight champions Samuel Peter was in his 10th round TKO loss earlier this month. Its’ a gamble for Chisora to take the Klitschko fight. On the one hand, he’d get a good payday and get some badly needed attention on the world stage. But on the other hand, Chisora could end up taking a lot of punishment and look bad in getting blown out by Wladimir.

A crushing defeat could hurt Chisora’s confidence and cause him lingering problems. There’s also the potential of Chisora suffering a really bad concussion that could make him vulnerable to future knockouts. Wladimir hits a lot harder than Chisora’s opposition thus far in his career, and he’ll likely be knocked out before he even makes decent contact with Wladimir. Chisora is young enough to where he could in theory be a champion someday once the Klitschko brothers retire.

It’s not likely, but it’s possible if Chisora improves a lot. But if Wladimir beats him really bad, it could make it hard for Chisora to reach his potential. Being realistic, Chisora should take the fight because he doesn’t look good enough to beat the top heavyweight contenders in the division right now, like Denis Boytsov, Alexander Povetkin, Odlanier Solis, Ruslan Chagaev, Tomasz Adamek, Chris Arreola, Peter, Eddie Chambers, Alexander Dimitrenko, Briggs, Tony Thompson, and Alexander Ustinov.

With that many fighters above Chisora in terms of talent, he would be crazy not to take the fight with Klitschko. It’s still a big risk because Chisora would have almost zero chance of winning because he’s just not in Wladimir’s league. He’s probably not even in the same league as the heavyweight contenders I’ve mentioned.
