Timothy Bradley wins unanimous decision over Abregu

By Sam Gregory: On the July 17th edition of HBO’s Boxing After Dark from the Agua Caliente Casino, Rancho Mirage, Calif. undefeated WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley 25-0 with 11 KO’s takes on Luis Carlos Abregu 29-0 with 23 KO’s in a scheduled 12 round none title bout in the welterweight division.

At the opening bell Abregu, who normally fights in the orthodox stance quickly switched to the southpaw stance in this round. Both men threw their jab testing their opponent; Abregu circled to his right which did throw Bradley off somewhat. After the closing bell in this round Bradley suffered “a small cut from an accidental butt”.

Both men continued testing their opponent in the second round; midway through the round Bradley landed a solid right hand that rocked Abregu.

By round three Bradley looked to be in total control dictating the pace of the round. Abregu was a game fighter staying right with Bradley trying to match him punch for punch. Bradley proved to be too fast for Abregu whose punches were usually late without enough on them to do any damage.

In round 4 Bradley circled to his right where he threw his jab and set up a left hand punch that he missed with in the fourth round; Abregu threw an overhand right that missed its mark. At the end of the round Abregu was cut over his right eye due to a punch

Round 5 both men traded punches in the center of the ring; Bradley landed a solid left hand when he countered a combination of Abregu; Bradley again scored with a solid left in this round

Between rounds the unofficial scorecard had Bradley ahead 49 to 46; another card had Bradley winning every round to this point.

Round 6 both men traded shots; Bradley countered off Abregu’s combination that he missed; Bradley landed a clean solid left hand followed by a 3 punch combination

Round 7 Bradley wasn’t throwing as many punches but he defended and blocked every punch from Abregu; Abregu went down due to a clash of heads. In the last 35 seconds of the round Bradley unleashes with a combination like he’s going for a KO

Round 8 Abregu is game and lets go with a combination on Bradley who counters landing a solid right hand; Bradley lands a big right to the side of Abregu’s face before the end of the round

Between rounds the unofficial cards score the fight 6 rounds to 2 for Bradley

Round 9 Abregu threw and landed a jab that was countered with a left than a right by Bradley that rocked Abregu; this was the busiest round for Abregu

Round 10 Bradley continued to dominate using his jab and circling to his left; by the last 20 seconds of the round the crowd was chanting for their hometown favorite Bradley, Bradley!

Round 11 Bradley continued to circle to his left using his jab but Abregu stayed with him trading punches

9 rounds to 2 for Bradley

Round 12 both men traded shots in center ring; in the last minute of the fight Abregu let go with everything he had but it was too little too late; Bradley clearly dominated the entire fight

After the 12th and final round the fight goes to the judge’s scorecards: 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 all for the winner by unanimous decision Timothy Bradley.

Bradley improves his unbeaten record to 26-0 with 11 KO’s while Carlos Abregu suffers his first defeat and his record falls to 29-1 with 23 KO’s.
