Timothy Bradley will beat Amir Khan

By Dennis Broadhurst: The light-welterweight division of boxing (140lbs) is on fire at the moment. There are several potentially great fighters in the division such as Amir Khan (23-1 17kos), Marcos Maidana (28-1 27kos), Devon Alexander (20-0 13kos) and Timothy Bradley (26-0 11kos). There are also some other very notable fighters that add depth to the division and provide stiff competition for the first four mentioned, these are fighters such as Victor Ortiz, Andriy Kotelnik and Juan Urango.

There have been reports that two of the champions of the divison, WBA Champion Amir Khan and WBO champion Timothy Bradley are looking to square up in a unification match. If this fight happens I only see one outcome, Bradley winning in dominant fashion. Both of these fighters have strengths and flaws like any other fighter.

Khan is a very fast puncher with decent power and good ring movement, however, he has a very poor chin and as knocked out back in 2008 by Columbian banger Breidis Prescott. Khan was also put down by Michael Gomez and Willie Limond at lightweight. Despite Tim Bradley only having 11 knockout wins he has much more punching power than either of these two. We have seen Bradley’s power even in his decision wins, knockdowns of Junior Witter and Edner Cherry are particularly impressive.

Despite Khan’s horrible chin, he does have some very good points in his game, he has awesome speed when putting punches together, and example of this can be seen in any Khan fight but one of the best is his first round knockdown of Michael Gomez. Khan also has a good left jab, as seen in his fight with Paulie Malignaggi this year.

Khan’s jab goes well with his height, 5’10” (4 inches taller than Bradley). Khan’s most notable win was against Andriy Kotelnik last year in the fight where he won the WBA title. This and the Malignaggi fight are his only notable wins. Khan is fast, has decent power and has good heart (shown in wins over Gomez and Limond where dropped), however, he has a glass jaw.

Bradley is a very well rounded fighter, he is only 5ft6 but is good at ducking punches and has very fast hands. I believe that Khan’s team are underrating Bradley’s power, despite having only 11 kos, Bradley has more than enough power to put Khan to sleep. Bradley is undefeated and unlike many undefeated fighters he has been proved at top level. Bradley holds wins over Junior Witter, Edner Cherry, Kendall Holt, Lamont Peterson and Luis Carlos Abregu.

All of these wins are worth mentioning and all are against good opponents with good records. We have seen Bradley put down by Holt with a shot from hell, Bradley got up off the deck in the first and twelfth rounds to win that fight, he showed great heart and chin to survive the first knockdown. Bradley is a decent puncher with his right hand, he can slip punches very well and is very fast, he also has a good chin and bags of heart.

If Khan fights Bradley at this stage I see Bradley getting through the fast combinations Khan with his speed and defense and getting through with his own hard, fast shots. I see Bradley having a better defence than anyone Khan has faced (except possibly Paulie Malignaggi), being just as fast as anyone Khan has faced, being more skilled than anyone Khan has faced, having better power than anyone Khan has beaten and having the chin and heart to drag Khan into deep waters.

Khan is a big, fast fighter with good skill but I see him as fairly one dimensional at this stage, all flashy, speedy combinations. I think that Bradley has the skills, natural ability and experience to drag Khan down, catching him with solid, accurate right hands and wobbling him before stopping him late on. This should be a great fight and it would be great for boxing if these two champions got it on, major respect is deserved by both fighters if this fight happens.
