By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Sr., the father of unbeaten star Floyd Mayweather Jr., doesn’t think that World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will end up fighting his son. In an interview on the internet program On the Ropes, Mayweather Sr. says “I bet you he [Pacquiao] won’t fight my son. I bet you he won’t take the test [speaking about the Olympic style drug test that Floyd Jr. wants him to take before fighting him]. I guarantee you.”
Mayweather Sr. sounds like he doesn’t have much faith in Pacquiao stepping up and agreeing to take the random blood tests that Mayweather Jr. wants him to take before he’ll agree to fight him. Pacquiao was unable to negotiate a fight with Mayweather Jr. a couple of months ago because he wanted Pacquiao to agree to have his blood tested as close as 14 days before the fight. Pacquiao only wanted the tests to go until 24 days before the bout.
The two fighters never were able to work out a deal. This is where they’re starting at for the new negotiations. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is working with Pacquiao to try and see if he’ll accept an offer for a fight with a reported 17 or 18 day cut off for the random blood tests. Mayweather Sr. is betting that Pacquiao won’t go for it. If he doesn’t, then there won’t be a fight because Mayweather at least wants Pacquiao to have blood tests, even though it’s kind of pointless if There’s going to be a long period of time without blood testing before the fight.
Mayweather Sr. thinks that if Floyd does fight Pacquiao, he’ll knock him out. Mayweather Sr. says “As you can see right now, I believe for a minute everybody was a fool for thinking Pacquiao would whoop Floyd, but you know what? Pretty much all of those thoughts have changed because they know that Pacquiao is not the fighter Floyd is and let Pacquiao tell me right now – he would beat Pacquiao easier than he beat Shane [Mosley], with or without whatever it is. There is a lot of things people can do but sometimes people can’t do things if things aren’t right and I know you can understand me.”
I have no idea what Mayweather Sr. is talking about but he seems to be dropping some kind of hint. Pacquiao will probably have some problems with Mayweather Jr. because of his bigger size and his amazing boxing skills. Pacquiao is first and foremost a slugger. He doesn’t have much of a jab to speak of and doesn’t have the boxing skills to really compete with Mayweather. What it comes down to then is whether Pacquiao can stop Mayweather Jr. or not. If he can, then Pacquiao will win. If he can’t, then Pacquiao will likely get badly outclassed and end up losing.
Mayweather Sr. says “Overall, if Floyd and Pacquiao fought on the same level with Shane and Pacquiao does whatever he’s supposed to do and Floyd does whatever he’s supposed to do and they’re both clear of everything – Floyd knocks him the hell out.”
