By William Mackay: Fresh off his 12 round majority decision over heavyweight contender Chris Arreola last month on April 24th, Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KO’s) is ready to take on one of the heavyweight champions in the division. Adamek, 33, doesn’t care which heavyweight champion he fights. He just wants to fight one of them. At 6’1” with a somewhat shaky chin, Adamek might be better off if he was to go after World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye, who at around 6’2”, is more the same size as Adamek.
Haye is listed at 6’3”, but in his last fight against 6’2” John Ruiz, Haye appeared to be the exact same height as Ruiz when the two fighters were standing eye to eye during the pre-fight face off. Adamek, ranked #6 IBF, #9 WBA, #11 WBC, and #11 WBO, would have problems trying to deal with the huge height and reach of the Klitschko brothers. Adamek, who likes to use an in and out style of fighting and a lot of movement, would have a hard time landing his shots when coming in at the Klitschko. Adamek says “I am positive if the fight against David Haye comes to fruition, two things, speed and my precision will prevail,” according to Sky Sports. “So this will be a very interesting fight. You shouldn’t worry about how the fight will look. It will be a very exciting fight.”
Because of his lack of height and his short reach, Adamek would be getting clobbered both on the way in and on the outside. He’d literally be getting it coming and going. And the way that Adamek was staggered numerous times by Arreola in their fight last month, it’s hard to imagine that Adamek would last long against the Kitschkos, even if he runs all night long. He just doesn’t have the size, reach or the chin to compete with them. I think a fight between Adamek and Haye would be far more interesting.
Haye is kind of in the same boat as Adamek in terms of chin problems, reach and height. Haye has better hand speed and power, but if he’s unable to get the clever Adamek out of there, Haye could find himself in the same situation he was in his 5th round stoppage loss to 40-year-old Carl Thompson in 2004. If Haye runs out of gas, he becomes a flat footed arm puncher with a weak chin and is very vulnerable. When Haye gets tired, he’s like a bee without its stinger and wings. Adamek would be able to tee off at will on Haye and batter him until he drops for the count.
That’s who Adamek needs to be going after if he wants to have a serious chance at winning one of the heavyweight titles. Against either of the Klitschko brothers, Adamek would be far too small and too weak to do the job. He doesn’t have the power or the size needed to get the job done against the Klitschkos and needs to be smart by going after the most vulnerable heavyweight champion and that would be Haye. Adamek may have to wait in line, though, because Haye could be facing IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko next, unless Haye ends up blowing the fight by asking for too much money.
