By Manuel Perez: Well, if Manny Pacquiao isn’t going to be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr, next, he at least should take on a super talented fighter like interim World Boxing Organization light middleweight champion Paul Williams if Pacquiao is seriously interested in fighting a 154 pounder. In an interview at Truefan boxing, Williams said “I difinitely would like to fight Manny Pacquiao. He’s got a style where he likes to throw a lot of punches. I also like to throw a lot of punches. If they [Pacquiao want to fight me right now, I’m very willing to get it on.”
There it is. Go ahead, Pacquiao, fight Paul Williams. If you want to fight a light middleweight, why not Williams?
It’s looking like Pacquiao will choose to fight WBA light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman next. Pacquiao is itching to win another title, and I guess this is pretty much the easiest title grab out there. I have no idea why Pacquiao would want to fight Foreman, but I know I’ll lose respect for Pacquiao if he does. I don’t care if Foreman holds a paper title. If Pacquiao wants another title, he should go after the best fighter in the light middleweight division. I don’t consider Foreman to be the best light middleweight in the division. Do any of you? Anyone?
If you’re going to go after belts, why not face the fighter who is perceived as the best in the division and not the 2nd or 4th best? It’s like entering a track meet and instead of facing the top guy, facing some of the lesser racers for a ribbon. What good is it to win that trophy when it’s against slower racers? I wouldn’t want the ribbon if I knew I was getting it by beating lesser people.
Instead of going after another useless belt, Pacquiao should move back and redo that fight at super featherweight with Marquez, and then move to the lightweight division and take on the best fighter at lightweight, probably Marquez again, and try to beat him without controversy this time. I think Pacquiao would lose, but can still try to collect titles by going after Timothy Bradley, probably the best light welterweight in the division.
I’d respect Pacquiao if he could beat those guys. I still think it’s stupid to collect alphabet titles for the sake of just collecting them, but at least he’d be collecting them the right way by facing the best fighters in every division instead of the 3rd or 4th best. I don’t consider Cotto the best welterweight in the division. If I was to place him in the division I’d put him behind Antonio Margarito, Mayweather, Shane Mosley, and Andre Berto.
As for Foreman, I place him behind Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez, Cory Spinks, Sergeii Dzinziruk, Alfredo Angulo, Joe Greene and Kermit Cintron. In other words, I see Foreman as the 8th best fighter in the light middleweight division. He’s just lucky he fought Daniel Santos for the title and not one of those fighters. If Pacquiao wants to get a lot of respect in the boxing world, he should fight Paul Williams. So what if Pacquiao gets beaten? He would impress a lot of people by taking on Williams.
