By Chris Williams: Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (27-0, 24 KO’s) came out front and center about his weight issues yesterday at the media workout at Joe Goosen’s gym in Van Nuys, California, saying “Right now, I weigh in the low 260s.”That’s bad news for Arreola fans, because that’s roughly 30 pounds too much for him for his September 26th fight against Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KO’s) at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California.

While I respect Arreola’s honesty on coming out about his fatness, I think he’s missing a screw by being this fat with only two and half weeks to go before his fight with Vitali. I mean, how much fat can you take off in a little over two weeks, certainly not 20 pounds of pure blubber?

To take that kind of lard off it would take at least a couple of months to do it the right way. Unless, of course, Arreola plans on making this a short fight against Klitschko on September 26th? Maybe Arreola is thinking about bum rushing Vitali from the word go and trying to take him out in the first couple of rounds.

The drawback is if Arreola fails, he will have shot off all his fireworks early and will have to lug all that fat around for the next 10 rounds. I can’t see that happening.

Sounding as if he didn’t have his feet firmly planted on the ground, Arreola said “I’m gonna win this fight, I’m gonna do it.” Arreola kind of reminds me here of the little children’s story “The little engine that could.” I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. I personally don’t think Arreola has a chance in a million to win this fight against Klitschko, especially if Arreola comes into the fight weighing in the neighborhood of 250 like his last three fights.

Arreola has looked like the Goodyear blimp in those fights and the fact that he’s won all of them is more of comment on his dreary opposition than on how good Arreola performed in each of those bouts. Arreola says “I’ll be ready to go 12 rounds.”

Yeah, I bet, in your sleep you will. How on earth is an overweight Arreola going to go 12 rounds with the best heavyweight on the planet? Can you answer me that? Arreola can 12 rounds against a human punching bag like one of the opponents that he’s built his 27-0 record on, but not against a high quality fighter like Vitali Klitschko. This is too big of a jump up in competition for a fighter like Arreola.

In a sign that Arreola is looking past Vitali, he said “I plan on unifying the titles.” That sounds kind of like something that David Haye would say, but not Arreola. I wonder if he’s feeling okay.

“I’m just adapting to working out two times a day,” Arreola says. He should be doing triple day workouts to take off that weight. He can’t afford to come in at 260 or 250. This guy has got to trim that lard off.
