title Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola possible for summer

arreola45

By Jeff Aranow: 35-year-old former two-time world title challenger Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) is the fighter that is being talked about as WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s opponent for his next fight in July, according to a source from the LA Times.

Wilder was given another voluntary defense by the World Boxing Council after his previous opponent Alexander Povetkin tested positive for the banned substance Meldonium. Wilder was supposed to fight Povetkin on May 21 in Moscow, Russia.

Wilder wants Arreola as his opponent, according to the LA Times. Arreola isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies at this time. However, the WBC will likely give Arreola a quick top 15 ranking as soon as Wilder’s promoter Lou Dibella makes it official. Read the rest of this entry »

title Spence: Kell Brook has to fight me or vacate

spence

By Dan Ambrose: #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) has no doubts in his mind that he’ll soon be the IBF mandatory challenger to IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) after he takes care of #3 IBF Konstantin Ponomarev (30-0, 13 KOs) in their IBF eliminator.

The International Boxing Federation ordered the Spence vs. Ponomarev fight recently for the IBF eliminator, and Spence has no problems with taking that fight. What Spence does have a problem with is Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn, who recently said that Spence’s promoters weren’t ready to let Spence take the fight with Brook yet.

Spence says that’s not true. No one has spoken to him about taking the fight against Brook. Spence says that if Brook doesn’t face him after he becomes his mandatory, he’ll need to vacate the IBF title because he’s going to want the belt. Spence says he’ll say, “give me my belt.” Read the rest of this entry »

title Robert Garcia in favor of Canelo’s decision to vacate WBC title

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia is in favor of what Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez did recently in vacating his WBC middleweight title when he was pressured by the World Boxing Council with a deadline for negotiations with Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Garcia says Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy made a good business decision to vacate the WBC belt. Garcia thinks it doesn’t matter if the Canelo-Golovkin fight takes place this year because it’ll still be a big fight a year from now when the two fighters do face each other. title Lucian Bute fails drug test for Badou Jack fight

By Jeff Aranow: Former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (32-3-1, 25 KOs) has tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine [also known as Enobosarm] from his last fight WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack on April 30 at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. The Jack vs. Bute fight was scored a 12 round draw.

The 36-year-old Bute tested positive in the post-fight drug test for the Ostarine substance. The World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman has already sent a press release to the media on Thursday letting them know of the positive drug test for Bute. Read the rest of this entry »

title Matt Korobov vs. Bryan Vera on June 25

korobov5

By Patrick McHugh: 33-year-old former world title challenger Matt Korobov (25-1, 14 KOs) will be trying to keep his career alive next month against 34-year-old journeyman Bryan Vera (23-10, 14 KOs) on June 25 on the Mike Alvarado vs. Josh Torres fight card at The Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas.

Korobov will be fighting at super middleweight rather than middleweight. It remains whether he’ll be stronger at this weight.

The fight will be the second for Korobov since he was stopped in the 6th round by Andy Lee in December 2014. That was a bout in which Korobov was ahead in the 6th round when he was caught by a hard right hook from Lee and then taken out with a flurry of heavy shots. Read the rest of this entry »

title Can Hearn get Eubank Jr. the Golovkin fight?

hearn55

By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBA, #3 WBC Chris Eubank Jr. recently signed a new two-fight contract with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport promotional company, and Eubank Jr. reportedly wants a title shot against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin before the end of the year.

Hearn says he’s made an offer to Golovkin’s promoters at K2 to make the fight happen with Eubank Jr. Hearn believes it’s the second biggest money fight available to Golovkin behind only the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight.

The question is can Hearn deliver the fight for the 26-year-old Eubank Jr? The other question is what happens if Hearn doesn’t get the fight for Eubank Jr. against Golovkin? Will Eubank Jr. leave Matchroom Sport when his promotional contract expires or will he re-up with them despite their failure to land him the fight he wants against Golovkin? There’s got to be some pressure on Hearn to try and make the fight with Golovkin in order to keep Eubank Jr. and his father happy. Read the rest of this entry »

title Hearn expects Kell Brook vs. Jessie Vargas deal to be done next week

brook4

By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is finishing up on the touches of a deal for a unification fight between his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) and the Top Rank promoted WBO 147lb champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) for a fight in either late August or early September, on August 20, August 27, and September 3rd.

The fight will take place in Sheffield, UK. Hearn has made the 27-year-old Vargas an offer he can’t refuse, and he’s now willing to come over to the UK and fight on Brook’s own turf. The money that Vargas is getting for the fight is rumored to be three times more than he’s received for his biggest payday of his career.

As such, you can argue that Hearn is buying Brook a world title by getting Vargas to come over to the UK and fight in an unfriendly environment where he may need a knockout to have a chance at winning the fight. Read the rest of this entry »

title Hearn: Haye needs to fight Dillian Whyte

haye1

By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn believes that former two division world champion David Haye (28-2, 26 KOs) is getting further away from a big money fight against his fighter IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (16-0, 16 KOs) rather than heading towards the fight.

Hearn believes that the poor level of opposition that Haye has been facing lately is hurting his chances for him to get the big money match against the 6’6” Joshua in the future. Hearn wants to see the 35-year-old Haye step it up against a better clash of heavyweight such as Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs).

This opponent would be a HUGE step up in class for Haye from the last two gawd awful opponents he’s faced in his comeback. Whyte would at least have a chance of beating Haye if his surgically repaired left shoulder was at 100 percent. Read the rest of this entry »

title Peter Fury thinks Parker is similar to Joshua

parker44

By Scott Gilfoid: Peter Fury, the trainer for unbeaten IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, says IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua needs to be cautious with his new IBF mandatory challenger Joseph Parker (19-0, 16 KOs), who just finished defeating ring veteran Carlos Takam by a 12 round decision last Saturday night in their IBF heavyweight eliminator bout in New Zealand.

Parker will likely need to wait until 2017 before he gets his mandatory title shot against Joshua, because Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has several different fighters he’s thinking of matching against him for his fight in November.

None of them are named Parker. Hearn wants to match Joshua against Tyson Fury in November if he beats Wladimir Klitschko in their rematch on July 9. If not Fury, then heavyweights that American boxing fans are familiar with like Bryant Jennings or Bermane Stiverne. Read the rest of this entry »

title Andre Berto sees weakness in Danny Garcia

Andre Berto

By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) is one of the potential opponents for WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia for his next fight. Berto, Adrien Broner and Amir Khan are considered three strong potential opponents for the 27-year-old Garcia.

Berto says he sees flaws in Garcia’s game that he would look to take advantage of it he winds up facing him. Ultimately, whether Berto faces Garcia or now will depend on their mutual adviser Al Haymon, and of course it’ll depend on Garcia and his father Angel Garcia. Read the rest of this entry »
