Pacquiao on the verge of retirement

Manny PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) is on the verge of putting a wrap to his long 20-year pro career next year if he wins a seat in the senate in the Philippines, which would seem likely.

The elections are in May, and that could mean that he’ll only be fighting one more time in his career unless his promoter Bob Arum can persuade him to fight a second time in 2016 towards the end of the year. Pacquiao lost his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and is coming off of shoulder surgery to repair his right rotator cuff.

Pacquiao is expected to be 100 percent again when he gets back in the ring in early 2016, but which athlete is ever the same after tearing their rotator cuff? It’s possible that Pacquiao will have the same punching power, range of motion or speed in his right shoulder after this injury.

This news has got to be hitting Pacquiao’s 83-year-old promoter Bob Arum and 55-year-old trainer Freddie Roach really hard. Pacquiao has been their No.1 money fighters recently, and if he’s going to pull the rug out from under them, they’re not going to have anyone that can replace him as far as making the big money. In other words, the gravy train is coming to a screeching halt in 2016 for them.

If Pacquiao is only fighting one more time, then it’s very possible his next opponent will be Terence Crawford if not a rematch with Mayweather. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching Pacquiao against Crawford. He’s one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters, and this could be his last chance to put Crawford in with Pacquiao so that he can turn him into a star the same way Oscar De La Hoya turned Pacquiao and Mayweather into PPV stars after fighting them.

Crawford needs a big name for him to get over the top, and there aren’t any big names out there available to fight him in Arum’s stable aside from Pacquiao.

For Pacquiao, a fight against Crawford likely will mean less money for him unless Arum wants to make it worthwhile for Pacquiao to take that fight by giving him a bigger guarantee to make up for the lost PPV buys that the fight will receiver compared to fights against arguably more popular fighters like Amir Khan.

If the fight against Crawford is only going to generate between 300,000 to 450,000 PPV buys, then Pacquiao would be better off facing Khan or even the winner of the Tim Bradley vs. Brandon Rios fight.

Pacquiao said to ABS-CBN: “I think I’m ready. I’ve been in boxing for more than 20 years. I prayed to God for guidance and I am happy about it. I will have to give up the other things that require my attention. If you are a senator, your focus should only be your job and your family. We cannot say if there is a rematch [with Mayweather] or not. It depends, it depends.”

I don’t think Mayweather is going to bother giving Pacquiao a rematch. He made too much money in their fight on May 2nd of this year and there isn’t enough motivation for him to get back in training camp to fight a guy that he already knows he beat in a convincing manner.

Besides that, it would be tough for Mayweather to get a better deal than he got last time he fought Pacquiao. Mayweather already knows he beat easier than he did Marcos Maidana, so there isn’t that motivation for Mayweather to get back into the ring to beat him again.
