Golovkin doesn’t think he’s too big to fight Mayweather

WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokvin (33-0, 30 KOs) says he’s a small middleweight, and is more than capable of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. by coming down to 154 to make the fight happen. Golovkin was amused recently to learn that Mayweather thinks he would beat him without any problems. Golovkin would like to get a chance to fight Mayweather to test whether he is too good or not.

“He’s [Mayweather] a great champion,” Golovkin said to ESPN’s SportnNation. “Look at me, I’m not big. My last couple of fights I’m 158, 159. This is possible for me. I’m going to 154 just for Floyd. I understand this is the biggest fight in the world.”

It’s great that Golovkin is willing to melt down to 154 to take the fight with Mayweather, but I think Golovkin would have to be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice if he wanted to get the Mayweather fight by him choosing to melt all the way down to 147 to make the fight happen.

If Golovkin were to melt all the way down to 147 to make the fight, I think he would be too weak to give it a game effort at beating Mayweather. Golovkin couldn’t take that kind of weight off by simply dehydrating in the week before the fight. Golovkin would actually have to take off a certain amount of muscle to get close enough to melt off the remainder of the weight.

Mayweather obviously isn’t going to give Golovkin a chance at fighting him. After Mayweather’s win against an even bigger fighter than Golovkin in Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and with his recent win over Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather seems to be in the shutdown mode at this point in his career. He’s got a September 12th fight against Andre Berto, and if Mayweather continues to fight after that, he’ll likely come back next year for a fight against Pacquiao in a rematch. Golovkin is more trouble than he’s worth it. Mayweather might have picked Golovkin out if he had no punching power whatsoever, but he’s too hard of a puncher for Mayweather to be willing to face him.

Golovkin should forget about the Mayweather dream fight because it’s just not going to happen. Part if it is mental. Mayweather doesn’t want to fight anyone that is technically in the middleweight division, even though Golovkin is lighter than Canelo.

If Golovkin were to drain down to 154 to fight all of his fights the way that Canelo does in draining down from the mid-170s to fight smaller junior middleweights, and then there would be a chance that Mayweather would fight him. But being in the middleweight division, it’s kind of initiating for welterweights to want to fight someone who is technically fighting at 160.
