Froch fires back at Rafael over criticism about Golovkin fight

froch7999By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) is the touchy one today after ESPN writer Dan Rafael told him to keep his gob shut if he’s not interested in really fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs). Rafael blasted Froch over the Tweet that he sent out yesterday in which he said “Too big & too strong for GGG.”

The tweet was no big deal, but it became a big deal when Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler called Froch on his words by telling him to back it up in the ring against Golovkin in saying “Carl, there’s only one way to find out @eddieHearn @GGGBoxing.” Loeffler basically lobbed an underhand pitch to Froch and all he had to do was hit it out of the park by saying ‘Anytime, anywhere,’ as far as when he would face Golovkin. But did Froch do that? Nope! Froch clammed up entirely and said nothing for the rest of the day.

Rafael merely stepped into the void and said what basically what a lot of other boxing fans were saying by telling Froch on his Twitter “If Carl Froch thinks he’s too big and strong for GGGBoxing wonderful. Then fight the guy and prove it. Simple as that. Otherwise, silence.” I guess Froch didn’t like being told to keep his trap shut because he opened it and took a shot at Rafael by saying “You should know as much as anyone, boxing is never that ‘simple.’ So say something constructive, otherwise, silence.” Rafael then responded back with “Calzaghe would have fought GGG.”

My question is what’s so complicated about Froch taking a fight against Golovkin? I don’t see how it’s not a simple fight to put together. I mean, it’s not as if Froch would be trying to negotiate a fight against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr. or another superstar like Manny Pacquiao. Golovkin has already agreed to fight Froch in the UK, and his promoter Tom Loeffler is saying they’ll move up and entire division to fight Froch at his weight at 168 rather than asking him to fight at a catch-weight or at middleweight at 160. If it’s a complicated matter for Froch, then he needs to say what the hang-up is that’s slowing him up in taking the fight, because boxing fans don’t understand why Froch would be hesitant to take the fight.

Last month, Froch said that he would make the decision to take the fight with Golovkin or retire by the first week of June. Froch had plenty of time to stew on the matter and make a decision whether to continue his career against Golovkin or go off into the sunset. It’s now the first week of July, and Froch hasn’t said whether he’ll retire or not. If Froch needs help with making the decision, then he should seek out some help from Hearn or whoever. Froch just needs to get off the pot and say whether he wants to take the fight with Golovkin, because it looks really bad with Froch sending out Tweets saying he’s “Too big & too strong for GGG” and then failing to back up his strong talk when his feet are put to the fire by Loeffler and the boxing public.
