Froch: I can take Golovkin’s power and end his unbeaten record

froch0034552By Scott Gilfoid: Despite the lure of huge money and tons of potential respect from boxing fans, former IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) hasn’t been able to make a decision whether to fight unbeaten IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a fight that would take place at the UK.

Froch isn’t sure whether he should retire and rest on his laurels from wins over guys like Mikkel Kessler, Lucian Bute and George Groves, or if he should take a risk and fight someone that is actually a top level fighter and still in his prime in facing Golovkin.

While Froch seemingly is frozen and unable to make a decision, it hasn’t stopped him from opening his yap and barking that he’ll beat the smaller Golovkin if they do wind up facing each other. Froch believes he’ll come out on top because he’s a little bit taller than Golovkin by 2 ½” inches and a little heavier than him by say 10 pounds, possibly less than that. However, Golovkin recently easily beat the 6’0” Martin Murray by an 11th round knockout in a fight that took place last February.

Murray is almost the same size as the 6’1” Froch, but with a reach that is two inches shorter. Froch’s size advantage over Golovkin likely won’t be enough for him to try crush him like he did against the past his best Bute and the vastly inexperienced Groves. We’re talking about a whole different category of fighter when we’re speaking about Golovkin compared to the guys that Froch picked up many of his victories against.

“I believe I can take his power better than any of his middleweight opponents and use my extra size and strength to end his unbeaten record,” Froch said via the Dailymail.co.uk.

I wouldn’t recommend Froch trying to test Golovkin’s power because it could end very badly for Froch. He’s on the verge of retirement at 37, and it would be a pity for Froch to take some brutal head shots right before he’s about to go off into the sunset. We wouldn’t want him to suffer affects in his retirement years.

I don’t believe that Froch’s size will be a factor at all against a talent like Golovkin. The reason so is because Golovkin routinely spars with light heavyweights and even cruiserweights, and gets the best of both of these fighters. In other words, Golovkin is used to fighting bigger guys than Froch and dominating them completely. Fighting a slow, easy to hit guy like Froch is going to be one of Golovkin’s easier fights, I believe.

Froch is literally made to order for Golovkin due to his tendency to block punches with his face instead of his gloves. Froch is so easy to hit, and he doesn’t have any hand speed to speak of. It’s going to be too easy for Golovkin to be able to tee off on Froch with shots that are going to give him a world of trouble if he decides to face the Kazakhstan star.

Golovkin also stopped Bute to, but he did it in the amateur ranks while fighting with head gear on. If you look at it on Youtube of the KO, it was a pretty devastating knockout for Golovkin. Bute, who is about as big as Froch, folded up as soon as he was nailed by Golovkin.

“This is one fight which does excite me to do it again. But I will get my trainer Rob McCracken, my promoter Eddie Hearn and my lovely partner Rachael into the same room in the next couple of weeks to discuss whether to fight again,”Froch said.
