Golovkin says he’s not surprised Chavez Jr. lost, still wants to fight him

chavez700By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) says he wasn’t surprised that the popular Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) was stopped in the 9th round last Saturday night against the hard hitting Polish slugger Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs).

Golovkin chocked up the victory to experience for Fonfara despite the fact that he has far fewer fights as a pro than Chavez Jr.

“Not a big surprise. Just experience,” Golovkin said via Fighthype about Chavez Jr’s loss to Fonfara.

When Golovkin was asked if he would still like to fight Chavez Jr., he said “I hope so. I’m ready for anybody.”

I suppose it would still be an interesting fight for Golovkin to take on Chavez Jr. Adding his scalp to his resume would be a nice accomplishment for Golovkin because he doesn’t have a lot of recognizable names on his resume. If he can lure Chavez Jr. into accepting a fight with him at 168 or possibly at a catch-weight at 168, Golovkin could look to stop Chavez Jr. faster than Fonfara did. It would still be a nice pelt to add to Golovkin’s growing resume.

I’m not sure that Chavez Jr. and his adviser Al Haymon would like to face Golovkin right now after the loss to Fonfara. It’s more likely the case that Chavez Jr. will look to take three or four confidence-building fights that will eat up the remainder of 2015 before he faces a tough test in 2016.

Golovkin has a title defense coming up next month against #2 WBA Willie Monroe (19-1, 6 KOs) on May 16th at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA. This fight could turn out to be potentially a lot harder than a Chavez Jr. fight for Golovkin because he’ll need to cut off the ring to force Monroe to fight him. With Chavez Jr., Golovkin will have no problems finding him in the ring because Chavez Jr. will likely be coming straight at him the entire fight for as long as it lasts.

It would just be a case of Golovkin chopping Chavez Jr. down in scoring either a knockout or a one-sided point’s decision. But again I’m not so certain Chavez Jr’s adviser will agree to put him in the ring with Golovkin. There would be a huge upside for Chavez Jr. if he were to beat Golovkin because his career would be turned around without needing to consume and entire year fighting meaningless tune-up bouts against overmatched opposition over and over again.
